The hour
before the hour.
The Forelight Institute exists for the hour before the hour โ the pale band of sky that arrives before the sun, when the shape of the day is not yet settled. We study what is just becoming visible: the forms, the mediums, the questions whose outlines are only beginning to resolve.
We are not futurists. We are lamp-bearers. Our work is to walk a little ahead and describe, carefully, what we begin to see. A lamp does not predict; it illuminates the next stretch of ground. We hold it forward, and we keep walking.
The institute publishes Foreword, a twice-yearly journal, and runs three rooms โ the Observatory, the Forehearth, and the Forewright. The reading room is open. The lamp is lit.
